All the while, I would steal away in the night whenever I had leave the day hence to meet Anna in our cemetery. I gained favor with her heart, but could not reach her mind, and she remained within her father's gripping claws, preparing for the inevitable day when she would leave for her life of solitude on some plantation or other. I would not be denied. My sights were set, and as it does so often do when I fixate, the obsession drove me nearly mad. I developed an immediate disdain for Anna's father for pulling her away from me, and even my new friend Edmund distanced himself, sensing that any reminder of him would also be a reminder of her. They closed the house on the island, and Edmund began working exclusively from Charleston.
