天職 Vocation

Yes, it’s been a while. Today is the last day of 2023, which prompted me to break the long pause and pick up where I left off in haste. Last episode was recorded 5 months ago in mid-July. I promised my listeners useful expressions while travelling in Japan, which remains unfulfilled. Don’t worry, I will get to that in early 2024.
皆さんお久しぶりです。今日は2023年最終日です。大晦日に慌ててポッドキャストを更新しております。前回のエピソードは7月の中旬で５ヶ月も経ってしまいました。日本旅行中の便利な表現の紹介を予告しておりましたが、もうしばらくお待ちください。
Today, I’d like to ponder the word 「天職 ten shoku」, which means calling or vocation in English. The reason I chose this topic is because I recently got a job, 10 months after I got laid off in December 2022. This year has given me many teachable moments, and I feel very thankful for the wisdom I gained in 2023.
さて、今回は天職について考えたいと思います。英語ではcalling又はvocationと言います。このテーマを選んだ理由は、ちょうど一年前の2022年12月にレイオフをうけ 、最近、１０ヶ月越しで再就職できたからです。今年は数多くの試練を乗り越えたと思います。今となっては、今年得た一つ一つの教訓をありがたく感じます。
The word 「天職 ten shoku」consists of 『天 ten』which means heaven, and 「職 shoku」 occupation. The word vocation comes from Latin, which means to summon or to call. It’s interesting to see that these words both English and Japanese express a similar idea that people are being called by God for these positions.
「天職」は文字通り天から授かった職業を表します。英語でcallingとvocationと言います。Vocationはラテン語で呼ぶ、又は召喚することを指します。日本語も英語も、神から呼ばれ、与えられた職業という概念をよく表していると思います。
I used to feel incomplete because I haven’t found my vocation yet. But then I came realized that we are all trying to figure out one step at a time, one day at a time.
以前は、天職がわからない自分の未熟さを感じていましたが、最近になって、私たちは皆、毎日一歩一歩歩み、学んでいる事に気づきました。
Lately, I feel like my day is fruitful when I find one person to show kindness and another person to thank.
誰かに親切にし、誰かに感謝できたらその一日は有意義だったと思う今日この頃です。

We are continuing with the series for the kanji “ki”.
今回のテーマは「空気」です。
Today’s topic is air.
このテーマはタイムリーだと思います。なぜなら、先週末カナダで相次いでいた山火事の煙がニューヨークに流れ込み、6月6日から8日にかけて世界最悪レベルの大気汚染が観測されたからです。本日6月9日現在、ニューヨーク市はやっと青空と共に空気も正常値に戻りつつあります。
This episode is actually timely when New Yorkers were
experiencing the worst air quality in the world from June 6th to 8th
due to Canadian wildfires that took place earlier last week. As of today, June
9th, the New York skies are blue again with air quality back at
normal levels.

Genki and Byouki 「元気」と「病気」

さて、漢字の「気」についてシリーズでお送りしています。
We are taking a dive at the kanji character “ki” in a series.
前回は漢字の「気」が表す意味を大きく５つに分けてみました。
In the previous episode, I divided into 5 categories for meanings of the kanji “ki”.
今回はエネルギーを表す熟語、「元気」と「病気」に注目したいと思います。
In this episode, I’d like to focus on the words “genki,” energetic and “byouki,” ill.
元気は気が元に戻ると書いて「元気」です。
“Genki” consists of the words, “gen,” origin, and “ki,” energy.
「元気」という言葉は、私たちの元の状態は「元気」であることを教えてくれます。
The word gives you an idea that our original state is well and energetic.
一方で、病気は気が病にかかって「病気」と書きます。
On the other hand, the word “byouki,” ill consists of the words, “byo,” ill, and “ki,” energy.
「病は気から。」と言いますが、健康状態は気の持ちようで変わると言われます。
There is even an expression, which goes 「病は気から。」, which means illness arises from sickness of the spirit.
「元気」と「病気」を使った例文で練習しましょう。
Here are some useful sentences you can practice using “genki” and “bryoki.”
「お元気ですか。」
How are you?
「病気にならないように、よく食べて、よく寝てください。」
Please eat well and sleep well to stay away from any illness.

Characteristics of “Ki”「気」の種類

前回予告した通り、漢字の「気」をテーマにお送りしたいと思います。As I stated in the previous episode, we are looking at the kanji “Ki” in this episode.
この漢字の読み方は３通りあり、それは「キ」・「ケ」・「ゲ」ですが、ほとんどの場合、「キ」と読みます。
There are three ways to pronounce the kanji character, which are “ki”, “ke”, and “ge”. Most of the time, the word is pronounced “ki”.
さて、漢字の「気」が表す意味を大きく５つに分けてみました。I have categorized 5 different characteristics of the word, “ki”.
1. エネルギー、魂：energy and spirit
Here are the examples. 例は以下の通りです。
