We continue our suite of host-picks that have nothing to do with the central premise of our show with Colin's random movie pick: Dean Parisot's 1999 addition to the Star Trek canon: Galaxy Quest. This time, we're the Thermians taking a piece of media at face value with no appreciation for context, irony or the dramatic arts. Or are we Saris? Either way, listen as we find a way to turn this late 20th century satirical sci-fi action into a reflection of anthropology and the transmission of culture, as well as meditate on the state of nerd culture, fictional space aliens and the fear of being a cringy millennial. Alien vs. Predator (2004)
Did the Predator aliens invent toxic masculinity? Are billionaire's secretly chill dudes? Would this be Freud's all-time favorite movie? Yes.We take a (slight) detour from our usual survey grounds to talk about our first personal pick (thank you, Elijah): Alien vs. Predator (2004), aka The Predator Industrial Complex. Join us for a review of this classic tale of human explorers finding themselves caught in a centuries-long struggle betwixt newly born larvae and a teen coming-of-age party. It's got archaeology, some form feminism(?), and whole heaps of blood. 2004 called and said, "this movie's EXXXTREME!" Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

KAOS at CAMWS (2025), with Amy Pistone
That's right! We packed our bags with recording equipment and made our way to the annual meeting of the Classical Association of the Midwest and South to talk about the 2024 Netflix show, KAOS. Filling in for Colin as co-host is fan favorite Amy Pistone, and our special guest for this episode is our first ever live audience!. While we might be at an academic conference, we can't help but do things the Movies We Dig way by drinking wine and dropping f-bombs throughout our analysis of KAOS. To learn more about Amy and her work, be sure visit her website. Music from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!): https://uppbeat.io/t/zoo/imagine Hosted on Acast. The Pyramid (2014), with Briana Jackson
This episode could totally rewrite our chronology of pyramid movies! Join us as we uncover the tomb of unspeakable (unwatchable?) horrors that is the 2014 found-footage horror film, The Pyramid. Joined by super special guest and Egyptologist extraordinaire Briana Jackson, we attempt to make sense of this confusing three-sided pyramid. We talk cannibal cats, abused camera men and why is Anubis is actually a good boy who did nothing wrong. You can read, hear and see more from Briana at her website brianajackson.com as well as on her YouTube channel @DrBrianaJackson. Epic: The Musical (2024), with Wren Fleming
Social media may be a dumpster fire these days, but every once in a while it takes us by surprise. In this case, it’s a new take on Homer’s Odyssey as a concept album titled Epic with music and lyrics by Jorge “Jay” Rivera-Herrans. Bopping along to all the highs and lows of this musical experience is the lovely Wren Fleming, a writer and long time friend of the podcast. Maybe we’re all musical theater kids at heart, because this is one of our favorite examples of reception since, well, Hadestown. Now if we can just get it on stage, glasses-wearing Polites and all!To learn more about Wren and her work with Hillfire Press check out the website and their Instagram page under the handle @hillfire_press. Über Movies We Dig | Film, Antiquity and Everything in Between
Is it a movie podcast? Is it a history podcast? Is it an unholy union of the two? Short answer: yes! Each episode, hosts Colin MacCormack, Elijah Fleming and Christie Vogler break down a new movie about Greece, Rome or the wider ancient world and what works (or doesn’t work) about them. But this isn’t a podcast for nitpicking historical inaccuracies. Rather, it’s a chance to get hot takes on Hollywood films from professional nerds/academics and take a closer look at the relation between our movies and our pasts. Hosted on Acast.
