Today we revisit the MonsterVerse after finishing the broader Toho franchise, rewatching Godzilla (2014), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024) with fresh eyes and comparing them directly to the Japanese films, themes, and monster mythology they’re borrowing from. We focus less on first-watch reactions and more on how these movies hold up as reinterpretations of Toho ideas…from Monarch, Serizawa, nuclear testing, and titan lore to classic monster callbacks, visual references, and where Legendary clearly did its homework or flattened the original meaning, especially as the series shifts from the more grounded mystery and atmosphere of Godzilla and the lore-heavy love letter of King of the Monsters into the bigger, looser Kong-era spectacle of the later entries.
