I spent many years in prison, and if I could give myself advice 20 years ago, here is what I would say. Stop trying to prove that you're strong, or that you're not broken, because that caused my own demise. I was scared to be myself, and I cared too much about what people thought of me. When you're broken, you think you've wasted your years, but God can use those years too. He takes everything that's broken and makes it beautiful again.

I needed to be right, and it made me miserable. When I trust only what I see, I try to fix everything myself, and I end up in pure misery. I learned this when a T-Mobile mistake dropped my credit score 50 points, and I stopped focusing on Jesus. The debt collector never budged, but when I gave it up to God, my heart was free.

I grew up in a strict Christian home, but by my teens I was deep in gang life, and it landed me in prison with two felonies. When I became a Christian, I hid my tattoos and chased a title in the church so I could feel good enough. Trying to earn my way to God gave me panic attacks so bad, I begged doctors to scan my brain for a tumor. It got so dark I had thoughts of taking my own life. Then I heard one message about salvation, and for the first time, all that anxiety finally left.
