low light mixes

This is another fairly straightforward mix theme. It dives back into tribal ambient featuring hypnotic, repetitive drums, electronics, traditional percussion, and field recordings. I've done several of these mixes over the years and it's always nice to revisit this style. 

I first got into this subgenre back in the 90s with the Steve Roach & Robert Rich album, "Strata." Like many musical phases, I overloaded on it and dismissed it for years. But now I really enjoy dipping into the sound every now and then.

My shortwave mixes go back a long way. My first one was posted almost 20 years ago in April of 2007. Yikes! I love the sound of these mixes and I love creating them. I collect tracks that sound like they'd fit the theme and when I have enough to make a mix I get cracking.

I'm not sure how this mix started. It was probably just a case of me stumbling across a tune that made me think of a dystopian sci-fi movie and from there I collected tracks over a few years. From what I can tell, I started gathering songs 6 years ago. 

I wasn't sure what the mix would sound like when I started laying down the tracks. As it began to take shape I realized it kind of sounded like one of my Blade Runner mixes. It definitely has some of that vibe but I think it's different enough to be it's own thing. I'm very happy with how this one turned out especially considering I didn't have much a plan at the beginning.

I've said many times here that one reason I like hosting guest mixes is because they bring a diversity of styles and choices different from my regular offerings. This latest set from Roquen Lómë accomplishes that beautifully. This mix is lush and gorgeous in a way many of mixes are not. Playing this mix is like a breath of fresh air.

"My last mix was so long in the making that it became sort of a trip to the past. So for this musical journey I wanted to stay as present as possible. This mix is pretty straightforward - it's a collection of Berlin-school style tracks where the arpeggio is relatively slow. I don't know what the actual BPMs are but these tracks are not the driving sequences usually associated with Berlin-school music. They unfold at a more languid, chill pace.

I was very happy to be able to include the track "Wenn der Südwind weht" by Roedelius in this mix as it's one of my favorite electronic tracks of all time.
