A sensation of its time, the spell of the Chandrakanta series was no less than that of Doyle’s Sherlock or Rowling’s Harry Potter series. उषा प्रियमवदा भारतीय मूल की अमेरिकी प्रोफेसर हैं, जो विस्कॉन्सिन विश्वविद्यालय, मैडिसन में दक्षिण एशियाई अध्ययन की सेवानिवृत्त प्रोफेसर हैं। उनका जन्म कानपुर में एक ऐसे गरीब परिवार में हुआ जो स्वतंत्रता संग्राम से जुड़ा था। उनकी माँ, प्रियंवदा को विधवा होने के कारण बहुत आर्थिंक और सामाजिक कठनाइयों से जूझना पड़ा। वे हिंदी उपन्यासकार और लघु कथाकार होने के साथ-साथ हिंदी से अंग्रेजी अनुवादक भी हैं। उन्हें 1976 में प्रेमचंद पुरस्कार और 2009 में पद्मभूषण मोतुरी सत्यनारायण पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया गया था।
उपन्यास और लघु कथाएँ लिखना शुरू करने पर उन्होंने अपनी माँ का नाम प्रियंवदा अपने उपनाम के रूप में अपनाया। उनका पहला उपन्यास, पचपन खंभे लाल दीवारें, बीबीसी द्वारा फिल्म में रूपांतरित किया गया था, और बाद में एक भारतीय टेलीविजन श्रृंखला में भी रूपांतरित हुआ। शीर्षक लेडी श्रीराम कॉलेज की इमारतों के संदर्भ में था। उषा प्रियंवदा के कथा साहित्य में छठे और सातवें दशक के शहरी परिवारों का संवेदनापूर्ण चित्रण मिलता है। उस समय शहरी जीवन में बढ़ती उदासी, अकेलेपन, ऊब आदि का अंकन करने में उन्होंने अत्यंत गहरे यथार्थबोध का परिचय दिया है।

When I began to look for more information about the writer, Yashpal. I was astounded. What I found out could be a whole episode in itself.
Yashpal could be the hero of an action packed thriller! His life story was one of stealth attacks, days spent as a fugitive, betrayal by friends, prison time, shoot-outs and a romance that withstood the test of time. And then he gave it all up and settled down to a writer’s life.
