Live from Toronto: Joel Edgerton on Train Dreams, Home Movies, and Staying Ambitious
In front of a live audience at the TIFF Industry conference, I was joined onstage by Joel Edgerton, the star and executive producer of the lyrical new Netflix film Train Dreams. We talked about that gorgeous movie but also so much more, from how he and his brother Nash started making movies together at home in Australia to what it felt like to be a "stowaway" on a Star Wars set early in his career to what he's learned from working for Kathryn Bigelow, Baz Luhrmann, Barry Jenkins and many more directing luminaries. Though he may be most famous as an actor, Joel frequently works as a writer, director and producer, continuing to collaborate with his friends from his early days in Australia and even his brother — five days before our conversation, Nash was on set as his brother's stunt double.

Telluride, Venice, and New Beginnings with David Canfield and Richard Lawson
Katey reunites with her former Little Gold Men co-hosts David Canfield and Richard Lawson now that they’ve also wrapped up their time at Vanity Fair but remain very much in the thick of awards season. David, calling from Telluride, explains how Hamnet became such a sensation there while Richard, a veteran of the Venice Film Festival, explains why Jay Kelly may have met such a muted response there. They also indulge in a bit of nostalgia for their old podcast now that all three of them have left it— but we guarantee there are even bigger things ahead.

This Is How Netflix Finally Wins Best Picture, Plus Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg on The Studio
Joyce Eng joins her old podcast co-host Christopher Rosen as well as Katey to look at the slates for the streamers who are diving into the Oscar race. Most of them, yes, are Netflix titles, and some really promising ones at that. But Apple and Amazon both have intrigue ahead— including one of the biggest wild cards of the season.
Then Katey talks to Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg about their longtime directing partnership and how it led to The Studio, which has 23 Emmy nominations and pulls off the miracle of making the Golden Globes far more beautiful than they are in real life.
