„Welcome to Earth“! Ich feiere 50 Episoden und 30 Jahre „Independence Day“ mit Regisseur Roland Emmerich, DoP Karl Walter Lindenlaub und VFX Supervisor Volker Engel. Die drei sind meine Gäste in einer besonderen Doppelfolge, die der Frage auf den Grund geht, warum der Film auch nach drei Jahrzehnten noch fesselt. Dies ist der erste Teil, der zweite folgt nächste Woche.

Als ich 1996 im Kino saß und auf der Leinwand zum ersten Mal das stadtgroße Ufo über New York aus den Wolken brach, war ich vermutlich der einzige, der dachte: „Geil, Wolkentank!“ Dass ich dreißig Jahre später von Volker Engel erfahren würde, wie genau er das gemacht hat, wagte ich nicht zu träumen. Heute, am Veröffentlichungstag dieser Episode, jährt sich der deutsche Kinostart von „Independence Day“ zum 30. Mal.

Der Film ist immer noch in vielerlei Hinsicht besonders. Drei Deutsche in den wichtigsten Departments machen einen Effektfilm für Hollywood. Der Film bricht alle Rekorde und ist immerhin in 1996 kurz der zweiterfolgreichste Film aller Zeiten. Im Gespräch mit Regissuer Roland Emmerich, DoP Karl Walter Lindenlaub und VFX Supervisor Volker Engel gab es dann viele Dinge, die mich überraschten. Welche Bilder haben die Filmemacher im Kopf, wenn sie sich an „Independence Day“ erinnern? Was hätte schief gehen können? Und was prägte am Ende für alle drei die Arbeit ganz besonders?

30 Jahre und 50 Folgen

Eigentlich wollte ich dieses Jubiläum gar nicht feiern. 50 Folgen sind halt nicht 100. Aber immerhin insgesamt über 100 Stunden Audio. Und mit Sonderfolgen und Bonusmaterial sind es sogar über 90 Episoden. Doch dann flatterte mir das Angbot in den Schoß, mit Roland zu sprechen zu diesem beachtlichen Jubiläum. Ich lud mir also für das Gesamtbild Walter und Volker dazu ein und unterhalte mich mit den dreien über einen der prägendsten Effektfilme der vergangenen 30 Jahre.

Und noch eine Premiere gibt es: Die drei Gespräche fanden zwar getrennt statt, aber ich habe daraus eine sehr persönliche, besondere Folge gewoben. Bisschen reportagig, bisschen Spurensuche. Ich habe bewusst nicht die altbekannten Dinge abgefragt. Bin gespannt, was ihr sagt!

The Return of the Sommerpause! Diesmal ist Regissuer und VFX-Experte Steffen Hacker mein Gast und erzählt von seinem Einsatz generative KI für Werbung und Kino. Steffen erläutert, wie seine Kund*innen damit umgehen, wie VFX-Filmemacher in der Zukunft aufgestellt sein müssen und warum KI nur in Ergänzung zu handgemachter VFX für ihn funtkioniert.

In der Werbung gibt es zahlreiche Regie-Duos, die nur in der Kombi gebucht werden. „Alex & Steffen“ sind eines mit besonderem Alleinstellungsmerkmal. Schon früh etablierten sie ihren Ruf, sehr präzise ihre kreativen Lösungen vorzuplanen und so ein Budget sichtbar zu machen, welches das Projekt gar nicht hatte. Steffen Hacker kommt aus der Indiefilmszene und betrieb mit seinem Filmakademie-BW-Kommilitonen Daniel Nolde jahrelang die Plattform „Hackermovies.com“, auf der sich Filmemacher*innen austauschen und gegenseitig unterstützen konnten.

Werbung & Kino

Seit 2005 arbeitet Steffen mit Alex zusammen. Und in dieser Kombination haben die beiden 2023 ihren ersten, gemeinsamen Kinofilm „Home Sweet Home: Rebirth“ gedreht. Dabei handelt es sich um die Adaption eines vor allem in Thailand sehr bekannten Computerspiels. Die Dreharbeiten fanden daher auch in Bangkok statt. Steffen erzählt uns im Podcast, wieviel gernative KI in dem Projekt steckt und welche Herausforderungen hier in den VFX-Sequenzen zu stemmen waren.

It’s the Sommerpause! Ich spreche mit meinen Gästen Senior VFX Supervisor Martin Hill und Lead Creatures Technical Director Jonathan Dysart von Wētā FX über die letzte Staffel von „Stranger Things“! Martin und Jono waren mit ihren Teams für die visuellen Effekte des kolossalen Finales der Netflix-Kultserie verantwortlich und verraten mir, wie sie Vecna noch bedrohlicher machten.

Wer in den 1980er Jahren „The Goonies“, „Poltergeist“ oder „E.T. – Der Außerirdische“ mochte, war entzückt, als Netflix 2016 „Stranger Things“ ins Rennen um die Publikumsgunst schickte. Zugegeben: Der Markt war noch lange nicht so übersättigt, wie heutzutage. Auch zugegeben: „Stranger Things“ war schon zu Beginn mehr, als die Summe seiner nostlagisch reanimierten Teile. Der Cast war suberb, die Geschichte von den Figuren getrieben und das Genre wurde um ein paar echte Klassiker erweitert.

Technische Exzellenz

Fast Forward. Senior VFX Supervisor Martin Hill und Lead Creatures Technical Director Jonathan Dysart führten für Wētā FX aus Neuseeland ihre Teams in die fünfte Staffel. Hill entwickelte für James Camerons „Avatar“ das Global Illumination Lighting & Spherical Harmonics System, ein schlankes Beleuchtungssystem für die komplett virtuell entstandene Welt des Blockbusters.

Dafür erhielt Hill 2014 von der AMPAS den Technical Achievement Award. Für die VFX von „Prometheus“ war für den Oscar nominiert und für „Furious 7“ ließ er den verbliechenen Paul Walker digital auferstehen. Zudem war er für die gesamte achte und letzte Staffel von „Game of Thrones“ verantwortlich. Sein Kollege Jonathan Dysart war in den letzten Jahren für „Deadpool & Wolverine“, „Better Man“ und auch „Captain America: Brave New World“ tätig.

DoP Marcus Kanter kehrt zurück. Diesmal bringt er uns „Braunschlag 1986“ mit, die zweite Staffel der österreichischen Kultserie von 2012. Ich spreche mit ihm über die Arbeit mit Regisseur und Autor David Schalko, die Zeitreise in die 1980er Jahre und wie ihm der technische Fortschritt in der Filmtechnik seit 2012 die Arbeit erleichterte.

Österreich hat’s drauf. Wo in Deutschland jahrelang an toten Konzepten herumgeschustert wird, haut die Alpennation mit hübscher Regelmäßigkeit Klopper raus, die einem den Atem stocken lassen. So geschah es 2012 als die erste Staffel „Braunschlag“ das Licht der Welt erblickte. Autor, Regisseur und Showrunner David Schalko legte acht Folgen zu etwa 45 Minuten hin, die von Ideenreichtum überquollen.

Riesenspaß

Die Bücher waren voller absurder Twists, die Dialoge scharf und treffend und die Besetzung erstklassig. Vor allem sah man allen Figuren den Riesenspaß ihrer Darsteller an. Vertreten waren von etblierten bis Newcomern damals viele Namen: Robert Palfrader, Nina Proll, Nicolas Ofczarek, Maria Hofstätter, Manuel Rubey, Adina Vetter oder auch Simon Schwarz. Wer damals noch nicht so etabliert war, wurde es durch die Serie.

Damals war es bizarrerweise Regisseur David Schalko, der eine zweite Staffel ablehnte. Mittlerweile hat er seine Meinung geändert. Ab dem 16. Juli wird 14 Jahre nach der ersten Staffel mit „Braunschlag 1986“ die Geschichte des durchgeknallten Dorfes im österreichischen Waldviertel weiter erzählt. Bürgermeister Tschach muss sich erneut eine Finanzierungsidee für sein marodes Örtchen einfallen lassen. Diesmal lässt er per Dekret alles ins Jahr 1986 zurück versetzen. Ob das gut geht? Spoiler: Nein.

Ich begrüße im Podcast Filmemacher und DoP Dennis Schmelz. Mit ihm unterhalte ich mich über sein Reality-Format „The Creators“ auf YouTube. Dafür lud Dennis fünf Creator aus den Feldern Foto und Video in seine Heimat Thüringen ein. Dort mussten sie Bildgestaltungschallenges absolvieren. Dennis erzählt mir, wie es zu der Idee kam und welche Herausforderungen die Umsetzung mit sich brachte.

Brauchen wir echt noch ein Realityformat aus deutscher Produktion? Ja, brauchen wir. Denn sowas wie „The Creators“ gab’s hier mit Sicherheit noch nicht. Sechs Creator mit sehr unterschiedlichen Skillsets und Persönlichkeiten jagen durch Thüringen auf der Suche nach dem besten Bild, Video oder Reel. Dabei vermitteln sie nicht nur ein Bild dieses wunderschönen Bundeslands, sie vermitteln auch nebenbei Grundlagen der Bildgestaltung und machen Lust aufs Bilder machen.

Bildgestaltungstipps

Dabei sparen sich die Filmemacher der Serie all die Aspekte, die einem bei den einschlägigen Reality-TV-Formaten auf den Zeiger gehen. Niemand wird vorgeführt, keine Privatsphären werden aufgedröselt. Alle sind nur für eine Sache da, Spaß haben und coole Bilder machen. Man gibt sich gegenseitig Tipps für die Bildgestaltung und die Zuschauenden nehmen das mit. Noch dazu ist das auch formal spannend erzählt, wenn zum Beispiel das große Finale in der letzten Episoe mit der vorigen Erzählstruktur bricht und eine spannende Variation wagt.
