Cool, Reduce, Remove: The Emergency Blueprint to Restore the Climate with Dennis Garrity
11.10.2026 | 1 Std. 2 Min.In this Climate Chat episode, we interview the Chair of the Heathy Planet Action Coalition (HPAC) on the organizations plans and actions to restore the climate through "Cooling" (Sunlight Reflection Methods or SRM), "Reduce" (emission reduction) and "Remove" (Carbon Dioxide Removal or CDR).
Dr. Dennis Garrity is a systems agronomist and research leader whose career has focused on improving small-scale farming systems in the tropics. He has been serving as Drylands Ambassador for the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, emphasizing the role of agroforestry, evergreen agriculture and landcare for sustainable land management. From 2001 to 2011, he served as Director General of the World Agroforestry Centre. He is currently Chair of the Board of the Global EverGreening Alliance, a partnership of nearly all of the major development and conservation organizations around the world, working together to restore hundreds of millions of hectares of degraded land and enhance the livelihoods of millions of the least-favored smallholder farm families in the tropics. He also chaired Landcare International from 2005 to 2020, a worldwide effort to support grassroots community-based natural resource management, and currently is a member of the Board of Global Landcare. Dennis is HPAC Steering Circle Coordinator.

https://www.youtube.com/@climatechat/streams- In this Climate Chat episode, we interview climate scientist Klaus Lackner on the myths surrounding Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR, a.k.a, carbon capture) and how CDR can scale massively if the proper policies are put in place.
Dr. Klaus Lackner is a former professor in the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment and the founding director of the Center for Negative Carbon Emissions at Arizona State University. A pioneer in carbon management, Lackner was the first scientist to propose direct air capture—capturing carbon dioxide directly from the ambient atmosphere—as a viable tool to combat climate change. Trained in theoretical physics at the University of Heidelberg, his career spans positions at Los Alamos National Laboratory and Columbia University, where he directed the Lenfest Center for Sustainable Energy. Lackner's foundational research on mineral sequestration and moisture-swing sorbents led to the development of passive carbon capture technologies, such as "Mechanical Trees," which passively absorb CO2.

Chris Parker is a climate scientist and hydrologist specialising in translating global and UK climate projection data into practical risk assessments for government, regulators, and infrastructure providers. He was formerly Climate and Data Lead for the UK's Fourth Climate Change Risk Assessment – Independent Assessment (CCRA4-IA) at the UK Climate Change Committee, where he authored the national climate framing and led the Climate Chapter of the 'Well-Adapted UK' report. Over a 14-year career spanning engineering consultancy and the CCC, he specializes in bottom-up, adaptation-focused approaches to assessing climate risk at local and regional scale.

https://www.youtube.com/@climatechat/streams - In this Climate Chat episode, we interview author Frédéric Samama about his new book "The Enigma of Climate Inaction." The book explores humanity’s perplexing passivity in the face of the looming climate crisis―despite our having known about it for decades, the fact that we brought it into existence, and the existential threat it poses to our species. We will be discussing and comparing Frédéric's theory of "societal bubbles" with host Dan Miller's theory of limits of human cognition to deal with long-term problems, which Dan covered in his "Barriers to Climate Action" Climate Chat program.
The Enigma of Climate Inaction draws on cutting-edge insights from cognitive science, anthropology, history, economy, finance, and philosophy. Samama argues that our success in accessing resources has bred an overconfidence in the systems that enable it. By uncovering the roots of our inaction, he moves beyond merely identifying the problem and offers a framework for action. He invites readers to experience a jolt in perspective―one that prompts a re-evaluation of our relationship with nature and our sense of responsibility.
Frédéric Samama has built a career at the intersection of finance, research, and the public good. As the inventor of leveraged employee stock ownership plans deployed globally and a pioneer in green finance, he also launched, in 2009, alongside Joseph Stiglitz and Patrick Bolton, a research center dedicated to the role of investors in addressing climate change; initiated innovations such as the first mainstream low-carbon indices; and co-founded the first global coalition of climate-committed investors. He also teaches at Sciences Po. Holding a Ph.D. in economics and a Master’s degree in philosophy, he is the author of The Enigma of Climate Inaction (Routledge), an essay that draws on cognitive science, economics, anthropology, and philosophy to shed light on the mechanisms of collective inaction on climate change. In 2026, Environmental Finance named him “Personality of the Year.”
