Locked On Lakers - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Lakers

LeBon James spoke with Steve Nash for ther Mind the Game podcast on Thursday, and needelss to say it was of great interest to the Lakers and their fans. 

A couple things grew more clear over the course of the conversation. First, LeBron will not be rushed into any decisions about his future. He's currently getting ready for a family vacation, and said he's not going to start thinking about next year until mid-to-late June at the earliest. And along those lines, the future he was discussing was a "will he or won't he play" type thing, not something that touched on where. The consensus seems to be that LeBron is planning for another year, but after 23 seasons anyone would be wise to take a minute to think things through. 

Second, while he didn't say anything that would indicate an overt desire to stay with the Lakers, when he did speak of this year's team, he was quite complementary. This year's group maxed out its talent, played hard, had a strong culture, was well coached, and all that good stuff. Why did they lose? Poor timing with injuries, and getting "out talented." OKC was simply better. They had more depth, more high quality players and so on. 

So what will it mean for the Lakers? Likely they'll need to renounce LeBron's rights to have cap space to work with. Whether they do it with a number in mind to bring LeBron back remains to be seen.

The Western Conference Finals are, understandably, creating angst around the league, including among Lakers fans. Why? Because pretty much everyone is watching the Thunder and Spurs thinking, "We're not nearly as good as they are." 

And considering both teams might not be done improving (especially San Antonio) the existential crisis is warranted. 

Law Murray at The Athletic has been publishing his tiered list of the top 125 players in the NBA. The Lakers will have four guys on it -- Luka, LeBron, Reaves and Marcus Smart, who snuck in at the bottom of the lowest tier -- and one (Rui Hachimura) who was in the group of players who just missed out. Four of those players can or will be free agents this summer, meaning the Lakers have work to do just to hold on to the talent they have, let alone upgrade. 

Meanwhile, OKC and San Antonio basically double what the Lakers have. Meaning those teams can go eight deep before anyone who isn't among the league's best 125 players (or basically the top 25%). 

That's a depth problem that is difficult to combat, and that's before you even see where guys land, because both Western Conference elites have plenty of dudes near the top of these lists. 

Nobody said Rob Pelinka's job would be easy!

Perhaps the most significant difference between this offseason and the last half-decade of offseason isn't the pressure to improve -- although that's a pretty big factor -- it's the change in ownership. 

It's the first where a member of the Buss family isn't a primary owner of the team. And under Mark Walter, there is an expectation that the way the team operates is going to change significantly. In a story for Yahoo on Wednesday, voices around the baseball and hoops worlds commented on the antiquated nature of the Lakers, and what it'll take to move them into the present day. Interestingly, while Rob Pelinka has certainly benefitted from the old-fashionedness of the purple and gold, he at least outwardly appears to be the type of guy who appreciates how modern organizations -- not just a sports franchise -- run successfully. 

So what changes? Will expectations for Pelinka be different? Will there be more voices available to him? 

And meanwhile, as Walter imports more experts from the Dodgers, the goal is to change how the Lakers operate. Is the mantra we hear every year of "the goal is to win a title" the right way to approach the challenge? Is there a better mindset to have, where winning becomes a byproduct?

Deandre Ayton and Jaxson Hayes were, in the aggregate, more good than bad over the course of this season, at least relative to what they were being paid. But unless you think the Ayton the Lakers got over the last eight weeks of the season will be the Ayton they get over 82 games next year -- which would definitely be a nice bargain for eight mil or so -- the Lakers definitely could use an upgrade. 

But how? 

Free agency offers little by way of impact centers. The trade market is hard to negotiate. And of course, the Lakers have to prioritize. So how far could they go to find better personnel? How far should they go? 

Sooooooo many questions... plus, some hypothetical trades to fill the void!

The arc of LeBron James with the Lakers over the last nine months or so has been quite interesting, from the moment he picked up his option but neither side seemed (at least for the public) to be interested in a contract extension. 

There were comments from Rich Paul about monitoring the situation, and then about the supporting cast, and (relative to his standard) poor play from James when he came back from early season injury. But in the end, LeBron made an All-Star team, found a role that seemed to suit him and the team well, and thrived over the second half of the season. 

Now it seems like James is more likely to return to the Lakers than not, but that's not yet guaranteed by any stretch. Paul noted earlier this week that contenders are reaching out to inquire about James, and while most of those teams can't offer James anything beyond an exception without jettisoning players, this level of interest could help open up avenues for the Lakers to improve should a) LeBron want to go somewhere else and b) want a little more money in the process. 

Could a trade happen? It would be very difficult to put together, but more interest does open more possibilities. 

And big picture, the idea that if LeBron goes the Lakers would want to make sure they get at least something out of the deal reinforces the larger importance of maximizing assets. 

If the Lakers want a shot at closing the gap between themselves and the Spurs/Thunder, they simply can't afford to mismanage any assets or opportunities they have.
